Devotionals
This page is for devotional resources. You may wonder what a devotional is…..well it is material used to help you have a daily time with God. It has a passage to read, things to ponder about and basically gives you something to do for those who wake up and have no idea what to say to God.
How to go about having ‘Quiet Time’ (QT)
Like I said before, you may have heard about quiet time or heard someone mention that “God spoke to me during quiet time” and you have no idea what is being talked about.
Quiet time is the quality, exclusive time we spend with God. It can be however often you want it to be (but the more you want to know God, the more you have to spend time with Him) and however long you want it.
Now you ask the question: What am I supposed to do during QT?
- I hate awkward silences. When you meet up with someone you do not know very well and you have no idea where to start and neither have they and so there is silence so thick you can cut it with knife. I don’t want the same thing with God! So heres what you can do (its entirely up to you what suits you, but this is a good starting point!). I am obviously assuming you opened up by praying and offering the time to God:
- Start off with spending time worshiping God. This can be through you singing a worship song or playing one and worshiping from that. Worship brings focus to God and so if you were thinking about something else, and you really worship God, all of a sudden He is all you think about!
- Read a passage from the bible. This is where the devotionals come in. You can randomly open your bible to a page and read from it and learn something from that (I mean you can learn from every passage of the bible) but God loves order! So to make it easier you can either go through a specific book in the bible or use the devotional book which has passages mentioned.
- Meditate on the Word. Whenever I hear the word meditation I think of sitting cross legged in a mountain with my hands on my knees saying ‘ohmmmmmm’. That is NOT what I mean! Meditation is basically focus and repeating a train of thought repeatedly in your head to allow deeper understanding to occur. Now apply that to QT. Reading the passage isn’t enough! Focus on it, keep repeating it, allow God to give you a revelation of understanding from it and see the relevance of the passage in your life! The devotional helps you with this through having a short paragraph on the passage giving you things to think about and how the passage may apply to your life.
- Pray. Spend time to pray about what you have learnt. Basically pray throughout the whole QT. Pray when you start, pray before reading the passage, pray while meditating on the word and pray that what God has revealed to you about the passage will be applied into your life. I cannot emphasise this point enough: PRAY!
- Apply. This aspect is normally left out of QT. After God has spoken to you and you have prayed over it, go out into the world and do it! So let’s say on a certain day you learn about the importance of serving others. Why not make it a goal for a period of time (a day, a couple of days) so serve one person randomly? This is what I mean by applying.
So have fun people and prepare to KNOW GOD MORE!
